Name Analysis

We all know that JK Rowling places a lot of importance on the names of the characters within the Harry Potter series. Often they reveal something about the individual's personality, past, or future. With this in mind, I have decided to include an analysis of the name Remus John Lupin here.

Mythological Analysis of "Remus"

The name Remus originated in Roman Mythology, within the legend of "Romulus and Remus".

Within one version of the legend (there are several), twin boys were born to Mars, the God of war, and Rhea Silvia, a vestial virgin. Rhea was the granddaughter of Numitor, the king of Alba Longa, who had been overthrown by his brother Amulius. Fearing that the twin boys would grow up to remove him from power, Amulius ordered the twins to be drowned in the River Tiber. However, once they had been thrown into the river, they were found by a she-wolf who cared for them (wolves were sacred to Mars). The twins were later found by Faustulus, the king's shepherd. He and his wife adopted them and named them Romulus and Remus.

Once the boys had grown up, Remus was captured and taken to Numitor for punishment. However, Numitor noticed he was unlike a shepherd's son and questioned him about his identity. Once their identities were discovered, the boys then fought against Amulius and killed him, restoring the kingdom to their grandfather. The twins then decided to found a city of their own, and chose the place that the she-wolf had cared for them. However, when Romulus began to build the walls of the city, Remus jeered at them for he thought they were two low. In rage at such an accusation, Romulus killed Remus and went onto complete the city himself. He later named the city after his own name; Rome.

Mythological Analysis of "Lupin"

The name Lupin is derived from the adjective Lupine, which roughly translates to "having wolf-like qualities". It also has a noun form, Lupus, which translates to "wolf". Interestingly, Lupus is also a constellation in the southern hemisphere which is loacted near Centaurus. Both the Greeks and the Romans thought that Centaurus (the centaur) was offering this animal (the wolf) as a sacrifice. This is because it appears that the centaur is stabbing the wolf through the chest with a spear.
