Remus International

Harry Potter has been translated in 35 different languages and in most translations the characters have different names to keep JKR's writing style intact. Remus' nickname Moony is very appropriate in the English language, but is meaningless in other languages. Most of this list of different pronounciations of "Remus" and "Moony" has been compiled and donated by Sidda. Additional Information

Pinyin means Chinese phonetic. The Chinese fan who sent the Chinese names also had some additional information: the Chinese word for Lupin does not contain any associative meaning of "werewolf", but the Chinese word for Moony means "The Face of the Moon".

Both the Czech and Polish names for Moony mean somnabulist or sleepwalker, which is actually very appropriate when you think of it, because a werewolf walks when other people are asleep!

The Finnish word Kuutamo (Moony) means Moonlight or Moonshine.

A fan wondered whether the Dutch word "maanling" actually means something. Well, strictly it doesn't, because it isn't an existing word in the Dutch language. However, combining the word "Maan" (which means Moon) with the suffix "-ling" (used to describe a person) and bit of free interpretation would lead to something like "Man of the Moon".

The French word for Moony, Lunard, also means "Man of the Moon"; "lune" is the French word for "moon," and "-ard" is also a suffix describing a person.

The Hungarian fan, Henri, who sent in the Hungarian names explained that the nickname, Holdsáp, can be broken down in the following way; hold = moon, sáp is the short form of sápadt, sápadt means pale.

The Swedish word for Moony, Måntand, means Moontooth. Thank you to Annie for this information.

The Greek word for Moony, Phengarogiteménos, can be broken down into "phengari" = moon and "giteménos" = charmed one. So the Greek translation means "he who has been charmed by the moon". Thank you to Anaredhel for this information.
